Be Silent

My inspirations come from childhood memories from natural elements such as stone, soil, and water. I grew up in a small village in central China surrounded by a natural environment. I had many beautiful memories there with the hills, forest, creeks, and animals. One of my favorite things was to collect rare pebble stones that I found in the creeks. Nature was the main part of my life. However, I had to leave the natural place for the concrete city for my studies. The noise and busy city life make me miss my relax and calm childhood life.

My art is a meditative process in which I translate how I think and feel about the relationship between human beings and nature. My series of work is comprised of jewelry and sculptures which contrast the human society’s busy and noisy world with the quiet and peaceful natural world. I mainly use natural materials, such as metal, wood, and clay, because while working with my hands, I feel connected with nature. As the making process involves a lot of cutting, hammering, soldering, and sanding, it is also a part of meditative experience.

In addition, I bring an old Chinese concept of the world into my art. This concept sums up my childhood connection — “the dome-like heaven embraces the vast earth.” It represents my Chinese roots and gives some of my artwork a reference point. My goal is to evoke the same meditative feeling and sense of peace that I feel, and hopefully bring a sense of calm introspection and connection to nature through my work.
